      About this Artwork

What would happen if the history of the Planet of the Apes ran parallel to the history of the planet Earth? Surely they would have a sex symbol like Marilyn Monroe. This would be Zira Monroe. Dr. Zira was a chimpanzee psychologist and veterinarian, who specialised in the study of humans, in the movie series Planet of the Apes. Zira was played in the first three Apes movies by actress Kim Hunter. Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson) was an American actress, model, and singer. Famous for playing comic "blonde bombshell" characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s and was emblematic of the era's changing attitudes towards sexuality. By the time of her unexpected death in 1962, more than half a century later, she continues to be a major popular culture icon.
