About this Artwork
Townships are a common phenomenon in the South African society. I have many friends in various townships but have never lived there. These photographs are personal observations that reflect aspects of the society, especially a society that have been neglected for long. The neglect, for me, is evident in the lack of cosmetic layers that often forms the false veneer that normally subdues the face of society. Cosmetic layers, many times, hide the historical roots of that society. But, like all man-made veneer, it is bound to weather with time. Sharpeville does not have much of this veneer.
These photographs were made with a medium format film camera on a tripod.
