      About this Artwork

The Strömkarlen is a figure from Scandinavian folklore. He “is a water spirit or troll who plays the fiddle, especially the Hardanger fiddle, and can be induced to teach the skill.” If you give him an insufficient offering, he’ll only teach you how to tune the fiddle. If your offering is to his liking, however, he will take your hand and draw your fingers across the strings till they bleed. Thereafter you will be able to play the fiddle so well that "the trees shall dance and torrents in their fall stand still."
