      About this Artwork

A poem line inspired by Trần Dần (1926–1997). Tran Dan is a Vietnamese poet and novelist noted for his radical works, and a pioneer in constructing the Vietnamese language through his poems with an unconventional method: sharp yet free, rich in visuals yet contains strong political statements. In the mid-1950s, as a middle-class intellectual who actively sought for democracy in North-Vietnam communist-regime, he was jailed for months but still produced numerous works afterwards. Tran Dan poems and novels were widely banned while he was alive. Through the freedom of using the brush in this work, I question the aesthetic aspects of diacritics in Vietnamese, which made this language distinctive from other Latin-alphabet despite the struggle caused for a tonal language. Of course, I left some rooms for your imagination and invited you to wonder with me.
