CELLULAR AUTOMATA (CA): RULES > The local update rule asks each cell to check the present states of the eight surrounding cells: • If the cell is alive then it stays alive (survives) if it has two or three live neighbors. Otherwise it dies of loneliness or overcrowding. • If the cell is dead then it becomes alive if it has exactly three living neighbors. In the simplest two-dimensional grid of squares, a cell might be defined as having four edge-neighbors, or eight, including those on the diagonal. In three dimensions, a cubic cell can have six face-neighbors to twenty-six if those adjacent are also counted. TAXONOMIES OF FIELD CONDITIONS > The use of field conditions in architecture reflects the complex and dynamic behaviors of the space’s inhabitants, and speculate on new methodologies to model program and space. A fi eld condition can be any formal or spatial matrix capable of unifying diverse elements while respecting the identity of each. Field configurations are loosely bound aggregates characterized by porosity and local interconnectivity; these internal relationships then determine the behavior of the field. The form of the field is generated through a “sequence of events” achieved by layering data and speculative diagrams illustrating temporal and scalar shifts.
