The doomed moons of Mars. Phobos and Deimos are named after the sons of War God Mars in Greek and Roman mythology; their names mean "fear" and "panic." They are among the darker objects in the Solar System. The moons appear to be made of carbon-rich rock mixed with ice and may be captured asteroids. These are very small bodies, with Phobos having a diameter of 22.2 km and Deimos 12.4 km, so they haven’t got enough mass to enable them to form into the roughly spherical shapes that larger bodies are able to do. Phobos appears to be a captured asteroid circling Mars. and orbits only 6,000 km above the Martian surface. No known moon orbits closer to its planet. It whips around Mars three times a day and is being pulled 1.8 m closer to Mars every century. If Mars' gravity doesn't tear it apart into a ring, it will crash into the surface in ten million years. is gradually moving in the opposite direction, away from Mars, just like our own Moon is moving away from the Earth. Mars will eventually lose this moon, too: it's spiraling away. Scientists have discussed the possibility of using one of the Martian moons as a base from which astronauts could observe the Red Planet and launch robots to its surface, while shielded by miles of rock from cosmic rays and solar radiation for nearly two-thirds of every orbit. Deimos may be a better choice for sending landers to support future crewed missions to Mars because it is further from Mars and thus spacecraft are less affected by its gravity during maneuvers. Also there are regions of Deimos that are continuously sunlit for an entire Deimos season, ideal for power generation.
