Priests of ISIS, the goddess of motherhood and fertility, wore wreaths on their heads, woven from the branches of wormwood. In Ancient Rome wormwood was added to wine. The winners of the chariot races received a valuable prize in the form of a Cup filled with this drink to the brim. In Russian and Ukrainian villages and cities wormwood was put on the thresholds, windows, under the eaves of houses. Fires were burnt with wormwood, people put it under their heads during the nights in the fresh air, wore in their bosoms... Wreaths of wormwood were woven by young girls on the night of Ivan Kupala. These secret wreaths were hung on the door of the house to protect it from quarrels and unhappiness.
