About this Artwork
The centuries of feudal Japan were marked by wars between clans and samurai who sought honor and glory on the battlefields. Known for great loyalty to their emperors, these warriors only found peace in the Meiji Era, where swords were banned in Japanese territory and order was re-established.
There were women warriors. They are called Onna-Musha and one of the most emblematic was Tomoe Gozen. The young warrior was noted for her delicate and lethal beauty. Skilled swordswoman and archer of uncommon dexterity.
She fought alongside her husband and other samurai against her own cousin's forces. Another great achievement was leading an army of over a thousand men in their last battle. But his ultimate fate remains a mystery even to this day.
Some historians claim that she left carrying an enemy's head and disappeared forever.
