Au 19ème siècle et jusqu’au début du 20ème siècle, le glacier situé à la source du Rhône s’étendait jusqu’au fond de la vallée de Gletsch, parfois jusqu’aux fenêtres du Grand Hôtel Glacier du Rhône. Une visite de la grotte de glace de l’Hôtel Belvédère et du lac glaciaire en formation vaut le détour aujourd’hui encore.
