Yellow hibiscus has been the state flower of Hawaii since 1988. Yellow hibiscus (Hibiscus brackenridgei) is a flowering shrub that grows on all the Hawaiian islands except Ni'ihau and Kaho'olawe. All three subspecies of the yellow hibiscus are listed as endangered species. Even in Hawaii, the plant is rare.
