The Blue-winged Olive mayflies have bodies that are a shade of olive, and a dun or blueish colored wing. The blue-winged olive (BWO) is not one species, but a group of them in the genus Baetis, Attenella, and smaller drunella, and are generally smaller mayflies. To match the BWO with an imitation during a hatch, is to get the size right. These tiny mayflies populate the rivers half the year, when most people don’t fish. Hatches can begin in late September and continue until April. The Blue Winged Olive is a print from my original gouache-watercolor painting. This is a great gift for the fly fisherman.
