About this Artwork
The term kopis (from the ancient Greek κοπίς, plural kopídes1 can come from the Greek κόπτω - "kóptō", "to strike, to strike"; 2 although it has also been postulated that it can come from the word khopesh of the ancient Egyptian3) could describe in Ancient Greece to a knife with an edge turned inward, used mainly as a tool to cut meat, or to sacrifice animals, or to a heavy sword to cut and stab with a similar shape.
The Kopis sword was designed to be used with one hand. Early examples show a leaf of up to 65cm, making it of a size very similar to the spatha.
