About this Artwork
The Zweihänder (German translation for "two hands", also called Bidenhänder or Bihänder) also known in Spanish as Mandoble is a large sword used mainly in the Renaissance period.
Although it was already used in Germany in the fourteenth century, it gained notoriety during the sixteenth century to be the weapon used by the German lansquenetes Emperor Maximilian I. Presumably they were used in the first line of formation of the lansquenetes to get open gaps between the spears of the pikemen, whose pikes were fearsome weapons for both normal infantry and cavalry.
