Katori Buta [かとりぶた・蚊取り豚], literally translates as ‘mosquitto-removing pig’, is a small ceramic pig that is brought out in the summer to ward off bugs, mosquitoes particularly. Inside burns a green spiral incense, called katori senkou (‘mosquito-killing incense’). The incense and the piggy burner are a staple in many Japanese homes, and are customarily associated with the summer image in Japan. Inspired by Japanese pop culture, the top left corner print features ミーンミーン (min min) writing, better known in Japan as ‘the sound of summer’. It is the chirping sound made by the min-min-zemi [みんみんぜみ・ミンミン蝉] cicada species—one of the many species found in the trees in the heart of the summer season in Japan. Their classic almost deafening tune signifies the arrival of summer, without which the summer just isn’t summer in Japan.
