This oil painting depicts a dramatic volcanic eruption of Mount Etna. The volcano rises in the centre of the picture, its crater glowing an intense white-orange and showing a massive eruption. Fiery streams of lava and glowing clouds of ash shoot up into the night sky. This explosive energy contrasts strongly with the dark background, which hints at the night scene.
