      About this Artwork

NIKOLETA: THE AUTOTROPH (part 2 of a series on Russian Cosmism) . culture | The sarafan and kokoshnik are part of traditional Russian dress. Here, they are modified to reflect the needs of the autotroph. . philosophy | Nikolai Fedorov (1828-1903), the father of Cosmism, believed that one of humankind's goals should be autotrophy. Essentially, humans would be nourished like plants-- through sun, air, and rain. As Dr. George Young of @universitynewengland describes it: "Not in the immediate future, but perhaps in far distant times, we may need fewer and fewer parts of the body we now feed, and eventually become more like mentally and spiritually advanced plants communicating in rich mindfields than like advanced primates leaping faster and higher in increasingly expensive footwear. We could eventually be enormous inter-connected sensibilities with a minimal physical presence." . art | The result of the evolution of human beings into autotrophs, Nikoleta communicates in the "rich mindfields" of the future and therefore needs no mouth. Her body, which does not need to walk, has fused with the Earth. She wears materials which allow her to harvest the solar energy necessary to power her existence.
